Star Thoroughbreds has become recognised throughout Australia as the premier thoroughbred racehorse syndication company offering high quality horses in racing share partnerships. Exceptional owner communication is a distinguishing feature of Star Thoroughbreds, with the ultimate aim to offer owners a superior racing experience both on and off the racetrack. The beginning of 2014 saw an exciting new chapter in the life of Star Thoroughbreds. From that year onwards, Star commenced offering yearlings to be trained by record breaking trainer Chris Waller at his Rosehill and Flemington stables.
STAR's success stories in well over 2 decades of operation have included Golden Slipper winner the Champion Australasian 2 year old and now top class stallion SEBRING and the wonderful 'war horse' and 5 time Group 1 winner THESEO who won at Stakes level in three states. His stellar career performances including his Group 1 AJC Epsom win, the Group 1 VRC MacKinnon Stakes win at Flemington on Derby day together with victories in the Group 1 Ranvet twice and the Group 1 Chipping Norton were all wonderfully memorable.
Our recent big successes have included a real favourite in the lovely grey mare FOXPLAY. A 3 year old Group 1 winner of the 2017 Coolmore Legacy Stakes during the ATC autumn carnival after having also won the Group 2 Phar Lap Stakes just prior, FOXPLAY started her 2017 - 2018 season off in remarkable fashion when almost doing "the impossible", defeating stablemate and World Champion Winx in the then Group 2 Warwick Stakes and at the winning post, our mare was only defeated by a very narrow margin. FOXPLAY had already enjoyed a wonderful spring in her 3 year old year when she took out the Group 2 Furious Stakes and the Group 2 Tea Rose Stakes and was subsequently crowned the winner of the prestigious PRINCESS SERIES for 3 year old fillies. The mare has recently been sold to a major breeding operation in Australia who will ultimately send FOXPLAY to stud. She gave her "all girls" group of owners some fantastic memories and was a marvellous performer on the racetrack.
Throughout the prestigious 2018 ATC autumn carnival our Star owners visited the winner's circle more than once, however it was the superb performance of our brilliant son of So You Think (NZ) the handsome grey colt D'ARGENTO who stormed home to win the time honoured Group 1 Rosehill Guineas which stood out as the "win of the season". In winning at the elite level, D'ARGENTO stamped himself as possessing the talent to compete at the pinnacle of racing through his 4 year old year.
INVINCIBELLA has continued to mature and is now competing "in the big league". The daughter of I Am Invincible won the $1 million 2018 Magic Millions Fillies and Mares race in January on the Gold Coast and the 2018 Group 2 BRC Dane Ripper Stakes at Doomben during the Brisbane Winter Carnival. She has now earned well over the million dollar mark and has stamped herself a highly valuable broodmare prospect. Our 2 year old I Am Invincible filly FIESTA displayed her talent with a win in the 2018 Group 3 ATC Widden Stakes, together with placings in the Listed Gimcrack Stakes, the Group 2 Sweet Embrace Stakes and the Group 2 Percy Sykes Stakes all in her successful juvenile year.
CELLARMAN represented our purple and white stars in magnificent fashion with 7 wins during the spring and autumn of the 2017 - 2018 year highlighted by his win in the Group 3 Doncaster Prelude. The 4 year old gelding was awarded "Most Wins at Australian Turf Club Courses in 2017/2018" at the end of season ATC Owners Recognition Awards.
In 2012 Star's classy 2 year old filly DRIEFONTEIN won the $2 million Magic Millions Classic and ended her 2 year old year as the second highest juvenile prize money earner in the land for season 2011-2012. The highlight of a superb race career was her Group 1 win in the 2014 SATC Robert Sangster Stakes at Morphettville in South Australia. In mid 2015 DRIEFONTEIN was sold to Japanese interests for a seven figure sum and she now resides in that country as she undertakes her role as a broodmare. Her total career earnings of close to $4 million (including her sale for breeding purposes), was a tremendous 'windfall' for her owners after DRIEFONTEIN's original purchase at the Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale for $75,000.
Another success story on the track was lovely Stratum mare, QUEENSTOWN. A $60,000 Magic Millions National sale purchase, she won just over $450,000 on the racetrack, including the Listed Grafton Cup and was sold at the 2015 Magic Millions Broodmare sale for $350,000.
With a roll call of talented 'stars' on the track, commencing with our first Group 1 Flight Stakes winner DANGLISSA (also the winner of the prestigious Princess Series), the list of quality horses purchased and syndicated by Star Thoroughbreds includes Zabeel mare PRIMROSE SANDS (NZ), who won her first eight race starts, KINGSGATE twice second in the Group 1 AJC Epsom, BANK ROBBER 2nd to stable mate and superstar THESEO in the Group 1 AJC Epsom, KINNERSLEY, SQUAMOSA, 2nd in the Group 1 STC Golden Rose and now standing at Sun Stud in Victoria, ARIANTE, FLAMING, PHEIDON, winner of the 2014 Group 2 MVRC Alister Clark Stakes, Breeders Plate winner WHITTINGTON, now at stud, RELIGIFY winner of 13 races including the 2017 Listed Prime Minister's Cup at the Gold Coast and also at Listed level, The Wayne Wilson at Doomben, VELADERO, winner of the 2016 Group 3 ATC Gloaming Stakes for 3 year old colts and geldings, together with PIONEERING the winner of 5 races and joint NSW BOBS Horse of the Year....the extensive list continues; quality horses aiming to compete at the elite level of racing.
Through hard work, dedication and a keen interest in doing the best for his horses, Chris Waller has systematically developed his training operation at Rosehill Gardens, to enable him to win the last 8 Sydney metropolitan trainers' premierships, and in doing so, he broke the record for the all time greatest number of metropolitan winners in Sydney in a single season in the 2015-2016 season with 169 winners and then again in the 2017-2018 season with 189 winners. This has culminated in Chris reaching even loftier heights in the past five consecutive seasons (2012-2013 through to 2017-2018), with the Champion trainer winning the most Group 1 races throughout Australia.
Chris attributes much of his stable's extraordinary success to the team of staff he has around him. Conscious of the cost of investing in and maintaining a thoroughbred racehorse in the metropolitan area, Chris prides himself on his stable communication to owners and he has a healthy respect for each owner's individual investment. Chris Waller Racing's owners have been further rewarded with even more opportunities for returns on their ownership investment when the stable expanded its presence in metropolitan racing several years ago with the acquisition of 26 stable boxes at the prestigious Flemington racecourse. This foresight has enabled Chris to feature prominently in the metropolitan trainers' premiership table in Melbourne, together with achieving spectacular results throughout the world famous Spring Carnival in Melbourne. At the beginning of the 2017-2018 season, Chris opened a Gold Coast stable to further benefit the stable's clients.
Chris concluded the 2017-2018 season with 13 Group 1 wins, 189 Sydney metropolitan winners and total prize money earnings exceeding $34 million. Amongst his stable of outstanding horses is the best horse in all the land, the current highest rated horse in the worldwide rankings, the internationally acclaimed WINX.
