In a most impressive performance on Saturday 4 year old Better Than Ready gelding CHRYSAOR powered to victory in the 1,400 metres Listed Vale Black Caviar Stakes at Flemington and in doing so he announced himself as a candidate for the Group 1 Epsom in 3 weeks or possibly some of the 1,600 metres feature races in Melbourne next month.

The winner of the $1 million Group 2 Callander Presnell in October last year at Royal Randwick, CHRYSAOR had a frustrating winter when racing in Queensland three times but he was back to his best on Saturday and now looks to be a chance for major race success throughout the spring. Jockey Craig Newitt was asked to go back and allow the gelding to get into a good rhythm, knowing that he would enjoy the long straight and the big open space of Flemington; the plan was executed perfectly as CHRYSAOR began to accelerate from the rear of the field at the 400 metres mark over powering the other runners down the centre of the track. He surged to the lead at about the 50 metres mark, winning in very good style and taking his earnings to more than $1 million. Great planning and placement by our trainer proved to be successful again!

From the family of the talented Religify and Hong Kong superstar Silent Witness, CHRYSAOR appears to be a gelding who may well race for some years to come – however several spring features await first.
