Who selects the horses at the yearling sales?

Star Thoroughbreds in conjunction with a team of experts including Champion trainer Chris Waller, renowned yearling selector Brett Howard, as well as veterinarian, Dr Ross Alexander will collectively identify the yearlings for Star Thoroughbreds.

Who will train the horse?

Champion trainer Chris Waller will train all horses purchased by Star Thoroughbreds at the thoroughbred yearling sales, at his Rosehill and Warwick Farm (New South Wales), Flemington and Macedon Lodge (Victoria) and Gold Coast (Queensland) stables.

Who manages the partnership?

Star Thoroughbreds will manage the partnership. Chris Waller will train and manage the yearlings purchased by Star Thoroughbreds. Every owner will receive individual communication about the horse from the stable staff. All accounts are sent to each owner individually and prize money is paid (per percentage) to each registered share partner in the ownership of the horse.

What are the ongoing costs after my purchase of a share?

When the horse is in training at Rosehill, the cost per day (for 100% of the horse) is currently $155 (plus GST). When the horse is spelling, the various properties used to spell our horses range in price per day (for 100% of the horse) from $37 a day (plus GST) to $42 a day (plus GST). The Chris Waller Racing stable estimated training and on-going costs per annum for 2 year olds and 3 year olds are available on request. Star Thoroughbreds charge an annual management fee of $180 (plus GST) per 10% share.

Will I have access to the horse?

Owners may view their horse by arrangement with the Star Thoroughbred’s staff. This can normally be organised for a suitable time Monday to Friday.

How am I updated on the horse’s progress?

When the horse is in training, the Chris Waller stable sends a weekly written report about the horse’s progress. When the horse barrier trials and races, owners receive details of the barrier trial or race results. Chris forwards his written report on the trial or race, including the rider comments. A voice email from Chris pre and post race is a regular feature of owner communication from the Chris Waller stable.

How is the prizemoney distributed?

Each state’s racing authority distributes prize money to all individual owners as per their payment schedule, in accordance with the percentage of the horse owned by the particular owner. This prize money is direct deposited into the owner’s nominated bank account.

What veterinary fees will I incur?

Owners are normally charged for a consultation where there is a requirement for the administration of any medication or treatments as prescribed by the consulting veterinarian.

Do I have my name in the race book as a registered owner?

Every registered share partner (maximum 20 names) may be listed in the share ownership of the horse. Multiple ownership of a share (or shares) requires the registration of a syndicate. This registration is arranged in conjunction with Racing NSW and Racing Australia.

Where will the horse spell when it is not in training?

The stable uses a variety of spelling properties throughout NSW for the purpose of spelling the Star Thoroughbred’s horses. Most are within an hour and a half of the Sydney metropolitan area. Owners are always advised where their horse will spell when it leaves the stables at the end of a preparation. Owners may visit the various properties to inspect their horse, by appointment.
