Last Saturday proved interesting with another strong win by HUMBOLT CURRENT (GB) this time at Doomben. Luke Dittman assessed the 2,000 metres race well allowing the gelding to settle at the tail of the small field and stay there for two thirds of the race. In what became a fairly muddling affair with the pace changing a couple of times, HUMBOLT CURRENT (GB) was only asked to improve just prior to the turn into the straight. Once balanced he started to pick up fairly quickly and at the 150 metres mark it was clear that the 6 year old would win comfortably, recording his 6th career victory. Star’s other runner in the race MANGIONE raced closer to the pace throughout and battled on gamely to run 3rd.
Back in NSW it was the turn of first starter, Deep Field’s 3 year old daughter SELEQUE who nearly pulled off a victory over 1,250 metres at Newcastle. The filly looks to have good talent and may not be a maiden for long. At headquarters, our former Dermot Weld trained import MASAFF (IRE) caught the eye when finding the line very well when he resumed in the 1,400 metres Benchmark 88 at Randwick. Kerrin McEvoy was taken by the effort and commented that the stayer seems set for a really good preparation.
Congratulations to the winning HUMBOLT CURRENT (GB) connections including our Star Thoroughbreds’ owners Paramount Racing (Manager: Kathryn Wood), Boeara Holdings (Manager: Denise Dunphy), Chris Olliver, Brent Hudson, Judy Hudson, George Ardill, Robert McKay, John Saunders, Victoria Johnson.
