Today’s newsletter is once again written by Rachel Wade, a Godolphin Flying Start trainee spending her 8 week externship with us. Rachel is from Virginia in the United States but is well versed in the Australian racing after spending 1.5 years working in the local industry prior to commencing the course.
Twice a bridesmaid last preparation, SELEQUE fought on gamely to break her maiden in good style with jockey James McDonald aboard. The 3 year old filly by Deep Field was purchased from the Goodwood Farm draft at the 2019 Magic Millions Gold Coast Yearling Sale for $150,000 and is well on her way to making good returns for her owners if her win at Warwick Farm on Wednesday is any indication.
SELEQUE jumped out cleanly from an inside barrier and made the running in a relaxed fashion. James McDonald gave her an absolute “peach of a ride”, allowing her to find a beautiful rhythm before asking the filly to quicken in the straight. She displayed a nice turn of foot to maintain her lead but had to dig deep to hold off the challengers. The filly will progress with the added confidence from this first up win and we can’t wait to see what she will achieve moving forward! SELEQUE has a very big Black-type pedigree and we are anticipating that eventually she can become a significant broodmare prospect.
Congratulations to the winning SELEQUE owners Paramount Racing (Manager: Kathryn Wood), Terri Johnston, Philip Ward, Katherine Ward, Susan Cameron, Margaret Roberts, Ashley Evans, Brent McCann, Leon Mugavin, Lindsay Caminiti, David Gray, Heather Wilson, Ray Aurisch, Helen Aurisch, Boeara Holdings (Manager: Denise Dunphy).
Our team couldn’t be more pleased with a metropolitan win from this well-bred filly the day after wrapping up at the Inglis Classic yearling sale. It was a record-breaking sale which made for tough buying over the three days but Star Thoroughbreds secured six quality yearlings to take home. We were very excited to purchase another I Am Invincible filly, a colt and a filly by first season sire Hellbent, an Astern colt, a Churchill (IRE) colt and a Rubick filly! Brett Howard worked tirelessly to find us a group of high quality yearlings and in each case we believe we achieved value for money in a very strong sale from a catalogue of over 600 entries.
