ANCESTRAL rewarded the patience of her ownership group with a breakthrough win at Doomben yesterday when claiming victory in the 1,660 metres event with Ben Thompson in the saddle. At just her fourth career start, the mare settled beautifully behind the speed in a field of six, enjoying cover as a tearaway leader set the tempo upfront.
As the field approached the home turn, Ben eased ANCESTRAL around the leading horses and asked her to let down in the straight. It took the mare some time to reel in her rivals, but she kept finding under pressure, eventually putting her nose in front and securing a well-deserved maiden victory.
Ben was pleased with the performance, commenting post race that “she got a little lost when she hit the front but overall she did everything right and can step up in trip now.”
ANCESTRAL was a 2024 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling purchase from the draft of Queensland breeders, Element Hill. She is fittingly named being by dual Group 1 winning KING’S LEGACY. The mare has taken sometime for everything to align for her to reach the racetrack but it looks like she is ready to hit some form now.
