Four year old gelding CADETSHIP won the last race on the program at Royal Randwick on Saturday with jockey Tommy Berry finding “Rawiller Road” (as described by race caller Darren Flindell) – a lane close the outside rail on the heavy 8 rated surface, which had proved to be the best part of the track as the day progressed. The son of Merchant Navy handles rain affected tracks and once Tommy had him travelling well just on midfield, it looked only a matter of ensuring the gelding found the better going in the outside lanes for the pair to be involved in the finish. At the 300 metres mark, they aimed for the right spot with CADETSHIP finding the line in determined fashion to win the 1,300 metres benchmark 78 by a half length first up this preparation. The heavy track wasn’t a deterrent and the gelding looks likely to continue to race well throughout winter and the coming months.
Recording his fourth win on Saturday, CADETSHIP has developed a good attitude and will to win and an easy barrier trial last Tuesday had him ready to perform well on resuming, so everything worked to plan. Thanks to Chris Waller and his team for the meticulous planning to have the gelding not only win at the weekend, but looking to be quite progressive this preparation.
