An early juvenile preparation in Queensland was sufficient to highlight quite early the apparent talent of 2 year old colt CHRYSAOR. He won on the Sunshine Coast on a Saturday metropolitan meeting late last year before drawing very wide and having only bad luck in the Magic Millions race in January. Returning from a break and with natural development and maturity, the colt appears to have gone to a new level this time in training and has now reached a point where he may well have aspirations of Group 1 success in coming weeks.
Certainly his winning rider on Saturday at Gosford Sam Clipperton endorsed those ambitions post race, with his on camera comment to Corey Brown on Sky Channel that “he gives you a feel of a horse that’s going on an upward spiral very quick”.
CHRYSAOR settled one off the fence at the back of the field in the 1,200 metres race and began to improve his position at about the 600 metres mark, going widest of all at the turn for home. Once balanced he powered to the line with minimal urgings from Sam, to win in easy fashion.
The colt will be aimed at the Group 1 JJ Atkins on 10th June at Eagle Farm and may well race in the Queensland Sire’s Produce along the way. CHRYSAOR is by the very successful stallion Better Than Ready and is out of New Wings, a full sister to the talented 13 time winner RELIGIFY which Star also bought as a yearling. Both descend from the Australian bred and Hong Kong raced world champion sprinter Silent Witness, so CHRYSAOR has the credentials to be a high class horse from his pedigree. He was so named because CHRYSAOR is a brother to Pegasus and with his dam named New Wings it seemed an appropriate fit.
Thank you to the stable team as always and to Brett Howard from Randwick Bloodstock for recommending the colt to us at the 2022 Magic Millions Gold Coast yearling sale – $115,000 doesn’t look an expensive purchase now.
