GABEIRA commenced this preparation with a dead heat win at Geelong but the 4 year old daughter of Deep Field made sure that victory would be solely hers when racing at Ladbrokes Park Hillside (Sandown) yesterday.
The mare began well from her inside barrier and jockey Brett Prebble held this position early until the speed horses in the field from the outside barriers pushed forward and came across to give GABEIRA a lovely trail. She travelled strongly behind those horses during the early stages of the 1,300 metres event and upon straightening, Brett waited briefly until he could angle into the clear to bring the mare off heels at the 300 metres mark. GABEIRA started to build through her gears at that point and finished off strongly through the line to win by a length. The mare is racing well and Brett commented that she is still learning how to race but clearly she can keep winning as she progresses.
It was a pleasing effort from the mare today and she looks set to continue on her successful preparation to date. GABEIRA is from the family of our Group 1 winner D’Argento, so she has much to live up to throughout her career, however she is on her way with this second win from three starts during her current preparation.
